What is a good Korean BBQ restaurant in the Bay Area?

Authentic Hawaiian Cuisine in San Jose/Bay Area? (Poi, Poke)?

  • My Hawaiian friend is homesick and i wanna do something nice for her. I'm looking for a real, authentic Hawaiian restaurant anywhere in the Bay Area... I'm not talking about the franchised L&L, J&J, or Ohana BBQ places but real, authentic, (even hole-in-the-wall) restaurants that serve the harder to find Hawaiian specialties such as Poi (she REALLY misses poi) or Poke. Does anyone have any suggestions??

When I first saw your question in the San Jose section, I thought, oh man, they're SOL! But then I read "anywhere in the Bay Area" so I think I've got you covered. I can't vouch for every one of these places, but my brother can, and he spends 6 mos. a yr living/working in Hawaii- so he thinks he's a connoisseur (for a haole boy). Here you go: Conga Lounge- 5422 College Ave., Oakland (510) 463-2681 Tita's Hale 'Aina- 3870 17th St., San Francisco (415) 626-2477 Kilohana Grill- 1061 Market Place, San Ramon (925) 830-1144 Kauai BBQ Grill- 698 W Dana St, Mountain View (650) 254-1788 Ono Hawaiian Grill- 3048 N. Cabrillo Hwy., Half Moon Bay (650) 726-8114 Aloha Restaurant & Bar- 148 N. Milpitas Bl., Milpitas (408) 946-9260 Hula's Island Grill & Tiki Room- 221 Cathcart St., Santa Cruz (831) 426-4852 Mahalo Hawaii BBQ- 4750 Almaden Exp., San Jose (408) 269-8793 (Sunnyvale and Milpitas locations NOT good!!) Hukilau- 230 Jackson St., San Jose (408) 279-4888 (live music on weekends) Do *not* eat at the Tongo Room in The Fairmont in SF- it's horrible!!! It's okay for a ($17!) drink and the view, but the food is, well, just really bad. I hope you find something here to your (and her) liking! There's a restaurant called "Hukilau" in Japantown in San Jose and apparently they have branches elsewhere. Check out: http://www.dahukilau.com I thought the food was good and reasonably priced, but I honestly have no idea how authentic it is. It's quite possibly tailored to local tastes. Good luck.

Haha I know how your friend feels. I moved up to LA myself and found myself craving the exact same foods. Dunno if they have a Maruaki up in the bay area but you can get poke there, if not go to an area that has a bunch of Japanese department stores and shops, buy some raw fish, get some onions and hondashi and make your own poke. As for the poi... I'm still trying to find where I can find some day old poi.

I know how your friend feels. My husband and I used to frequent Aloha Family Kitchen in Milpitas for their poki, but they apparently only do catering now. We recently learned that Takahashi Japanese market in San Mateo flies in orders from island on a weekly basis. You can order poi, lau-lau and even chili from Zippy's.
