What are the best places to eat in Salzburg?

Good places to eat in San Francisco?

  • I'm going to be in SF in early March for a conference and want to get some good food. I know that there are probably a million great places to eat in SF, but I'm looking for the "off the beaten path" places. In any big city there are the well-known places that the tourists eat. These are usually very good...however...each big city also has the lesser-known little places that the locals eat. These are usually freakin' great. I need opinions from some locals.

I feel like if you're coming to SF, you gotta get some seafood....clam chowder, crab louie salad, etc. Definitely try Swan Oyster Depot on Polk Street and California Street, best clam chowder and seafood in my opinion. I love hanging out in the mission district, there are a few good restaurants but I would have to say my favorite there is Luna Park. If you go to Haight, check out Cha Cha Cha's for Cuban food and lots of sangria! Hit up the Richmond District, 3rd and Clement Street, for some Burma Superstar and get the Rainbow Salad....YUM. I'm a big fan of Indonesian food (I'm part indo) and my favorite place is Borobudur on Post and Jones. Hope I was some help. Have fun while you're here! Oh, also, House of Nanking in Chinatown!

Any place in Chinatown. If you're feeling adventurous, go with a Chinese native if you can round one up, and let that person do the ordering. I did that one time when I was stationed at Fort Ord (near Monterey). I went up to SF one weekend with this Chinese guy from my unit, and he found a restaurant which served something he liked. He did the ordering, in Chinese of course. The waiter brought us what he said was shrimp soup, but they looked more like lobster tails, I'm not complaining. Then, for the entree, the waiter brought out a plate of these slimy-looking brown things which I couldn't identify, I asked my buddy, "What are these things?" He said, "Duck's feet." They tasted better than they looked. My buddy said, "In China, the emperors used to eat a thousand duck's feet a day." I said, "No wonder. There's not much meat on them!"

Go to the Embarcadero, near Fisherman's Wharf but keep going! Try Pompeii's Grotto...you'll never look (or eat) at the other restaurants on the Wharf. For Chinese food, try Tommy Toy's in Chinatown, Yet Wah out on Clement, or Yank Sing in the Rincon center. For quick, casual Chinese, go to Long Life Noodle Bar in the Sony Metreon on Mission. Lefty O'Doul's on Geary is a must to visit, as well as the buffalo stew at Tommy's Joynt. If you get to Tiburon (across the Golden Gate Bridge in Marin County) go to Sam's Anchor Cafe for snacks, drinks, and sittin' on the dock of the bay. Enjoy SF. It's the best city in the world to visit.

Whenever I travel to San Fran I always make a stop at Northbeach Italian Resturant, wonderful food, great wine and Servers are great too! The Northbeach area in San Francisco is like New York City's Little Italy.. enjoy!

If you go to Beach Blanket Babylon which you should do if you're in SF, down the street on the corner is a place called Capp's I believe that's the name. Hearty Italian food. The Stinking Rose in North Beach if you like garlic, Fog City Diner on the Embarcadero, and the Chop House at SF Giants Stadium. North Beach Restaurant for good Italian. There are many places in the Avenues and the Mission, ask your hotel concierge. I also think it's called Mary's Pizza, very good Pizza. The wharf is pretty good but way over-priced.

SF has more restaurants per capita than any other city in the world. Without knowing your food preferences, location or budget this question is pretty much impossible to answer. Try looking at resolved questions in SF dining out for some ideas.

I like Tsing Tao on 32nd ave and Clement. Their best dishes are the chili fried prawns and the hot braised chicken drumsticks. For pizza, Gaspare's on Geary is great. Tommy's for Mexican food on Geary has excellent Yucatan cuisine.
