Anybody know of any good fish and chips restaurants in san diego?
-
I want to go walk around the harbor in san Diego and get some good fish and chips (not expensive seafood restaurants) something where u can eat outside and walk around and look at shops. Does san diego have this? I'm from Ventura which has a cool harbor but everything I look up in san Diego harbor marina area just brings up hotels and fancy dining. Anybody familiar with San Diego ca?

Answer:
San Diego has a pretty big bay, with multiple waterfront areas so it depends on where youre going. Probably the busiest waterfront area is the Embarcadero, it starts at the San Diego Convention Center/Hyatt Hotel and wraps around until it roughly reaches the San Diego Maritime Museum and the San Diego County Government Building. If your going to this area, there are only a few places that sell fish and chips, but being a foodie, i have to say there aren't any spectacular ones. Anthony's at the north end of the embarcadero, near the star of india is decent. They have a casual walk up window called "Anthony's Fishette" with an outdoor seating area on the water, i think fish and chips are like $9-10. In the same area, (across the street from Anthony's) there's chain restaurant called Elephant and Castle that serves english fish and chips in the lobby of the Holiday Inn. It's nothing special, but you can choose halibut or cod, and its like $12. It's a restaurant, but any place in San Diego lets you take it to go. However, there aren't any shops around. The place with the most shops is where there are no fish and chip options. The southern end of the embarcadero has just fancy hotel restaurants and fast food places in seaport village. Point Loma is aways from the downtown area, and not much fun walking around cause it's more of an actual working yacht/harbor where people are launching fishing boats, as opposed to the Embarcadero which is lined with tourist stuff. I think Point Loma Seafood is overrated, its close to $12-14 for fish and chips, and although the fish is fresh, the batter isn't that great. In my opinion, my favorite fish and chips place is Shakespeare's Pub next to the 5 freeway on Washington and India, outside downtown San Diego. They do a really good tempura batter with a huge piece of cod, thick cut chips and english peas. For lunch 11-4pm, the prices are decent. They have a nice outdoor patio that overlooks downtown san diego (and the freeway ahah). Yelper and chowhounders seem to agree that the fish and chips are pretty good here. Another option is just to get some fish and chips to-go from a downtown restaurant and take it with you, most places will. The Field Irish Pub in the Gaslamp is decent, so is Karl Strauss near little italy. Here's a good tourist resource for the san diego bay: http://www.thebigbay.com/

I visited San Diego last summer and went to Point Loma Seafoods, which was very nice. It's across the harbor from the city and a rather short drive, but it has a really pretty view and the food was great.

I don't think it's near the harbor, but if you're downtown south of the Gaslamp District, I recommend Tin Fish. Right in the shadow of Petco Park, across from the convention center - I love their shrimp + scallops, and their clam chowder is great too. I go there once a year during Comic-Con when I need a break.
