Where to get a classic Philly Cheese Steak in Philadelphia?

  • I'm going to Philly for the first time, and of course, I want to have a classic philly cheese steak. I want to know from people who have eaten a cheese steak in Philly or live there, where do they serve really good (The Best) cheese steak's? I have seen on tv Pat's, Geno's and Tony Luke's, but those seem like they would be very touristy, but they all look very good. I can't decide?

    Geno's is the place to go. If you really want to challenge yourself get one from Geno's and then walk across the street to Pat's and get one from there and decide for yourself. That is what a buddy and I did when visiting from WI. Split one from each and both went back to Geno's to get a whole one a piece after because it was that good. It is not as "touristy" as you think. May have to park a few blocks away but well worth it.

I tried many times to get a "real cheese steak " in Philly as I go there often. No luck. I refuse to accept cheez whiz as part of the sandwich! Where I come from (Atlantic City) it's: grilled minute steak, provolone cheese slices, tomato slices, shredded lettuce and dressed with olive oil with salt, pepper, basil etc. in it. Onions, raw or fried, are optional, as are hot peppers. Tony's and Pat's both use cheez whiz goo on theirs, and both use the soft Italian rolls, not the crusty ones from the brick ovens in Atl. City. Good luck with your search. If you ask around in Philly all you'll likely get referred to are Tony's & Pat's. Ask a well-dressed person for a referral or pick up some of the free newspapers for restaurant guides. I asked some of the Park Service people for referrals to a steak house and even described "a piece of beef on a plate next to a baked potato and a veg" and still got referred to Tony's and Pat's . Damn, they got good PR but lousey sandwiches.
