  • dining in philadelphia

Some of the best restaurants in the city are right there in Old City (which unfortunately means some of the most expensive restaurants in the city!). Walk down Market or Chestnut (towards 2nd), and you will find MANY places to eat. Fork is fantastic, but if that's too pricey for lunch, check out their gourmet market & lunch counter, Fork:etc (308 Market Street). There's also the Continental, at 138 Market St (it's the dining car with an olive on top--you can't miss it). It's an upscale diner, which turns into a swank martini bar at night. An order of their shoestring fries can feed the entire table. I've had terrific lunches at Eulogy (136 Chestnut), which specializes in Belgian cuisine and beer. Sit upstairs if you want to get away from the bar, and try the mussels! And finally, if you want dessert, don't miss the Franklin Fountain (at 116 Market St)! It's an old-fashioned soda counter, right down to the cash register (cash only, FYI). Their ice cream, candy, and waffles are handmade on site, and it's all delicious. If you walk in the other direction, you'll be near Chinatown and the Reading Terminal Market. The market (51 N 12th St) is a Philadelphia institution, where you can find fresh produce, in addition to cheesesteaks, soul food, and cuisines from around the world. If you wander a little north of there, you can find plenty of places to eat in Chinatown. The best is Sang Kee's Duck House at 9th & Vine (well worth the walk!). Enjoy!

I don't know, but better wear a flak jacket. The crime rate in the City of Brotherly Love is off the charts.

"Jones" - 7th and Chestnut (upscale diner style food without the diner atmosphere) "Washington Square West" - 7th and Locust (great food w/ Marcus Samuelson signature; outdoor dining is fabulous) "Morimoto" - 8th and Chestnut (The real "Iron Chef's" signature restaurant - one of the coolest atmospheres I've seen - like an underwater cavern) The Liberty Bell is 6th and Chestnut. Locust is 2 blocks south of Chestnut.
