How do I open up my own restaurant?

How expensive is it to open a restaurant in Manhattan.?

  • Lets say i were to open a restaurant in an already existing restaurant that closed its doors spot, how much would it cost to not only buy the lot(given that the restaurant is still standing, not torn down.) but also refurbish it etc.

    you probably wont be buying the lot if its in in NYC. what landlord would not want to hold on to such a cash generator? youll be BUYING the LEASE. ( for instance youll be putting down approx. $500,000 up front for a 7 year lease of a 1,000- 3,000 sq ft area and be paying $4,000 - $15,000 a month. (same area 3 year lease, maybe $300,000...etc.) all in all youll be paying about $300,000 - $700,000 for a small restaurant and youll be paying $4,000 - $18,000 a month expenses including rent. you wont OWN anything but the furniture and the lease ( a paper agreement, should you want to close shop, you will sell the lease to somebody else, or your landlord might be kind enough not to keep you obligated to it. im sure you were hoping for a different answer with smaller numbers, but im being realistic. good luck.

Word of advice, do not think about opening up a restaurant in Manhattan if you do not have the experience. You are more likely to be out of business in six months than anywhere else in the country. If you want to open up something, try it in a nice friendly neighborhood and then try the big leagues.

depending on the size of the place, you'll need at least 1 million just to open the doors. hope the liquor license is included. or thats another headache you have to deal with....cuz a liquor license is CRUCIAL. also its a common fact that for every ONE restaurant that opens in nyc, 10 CLOSE. the restaurant biz in nyc is a tough racket (especially in this market). even great chefs like gray kunz, jean georges, bouley and ducasse were forced to close. so, good luck.
