How do I become a waiter?

So how do I become a waiter in NYC?

  • At 18 yrs with no experience? Is it possible for me to get the job and if so where and how?

  • Answer:

At 18 with no experience, to get a waiter job in Manhattan is highly unlikely. The majority of waiters in Manhattan are unionized and easily make 6-figures a year. If you really want to pursue this, you would have to work your way up. Apply for a busser position, as that is the best way to learn the trade. If you are presentable and energetic with a willingness to learn, most places will take you as a busser.

Go to NY, and apply at restaurants. Some nation wide chain type places train you... independent ones probably not.

You can find some place to hire you. Try for the highest end that will hire with no experience. If you look really presentable and can show from other jobs, references, etc, that you learn really fast and have what it takes, you may be able to talk a nicer place into hiring you. Work really hard to learn the best customer service. Show up on time, stay late, don't miss days unless dying, be helpful to other servers, and ask to take on more work. Keep moving up to nicer restaurants. Eventually you'll get the kind of job you want.
