How old do you have to be to get a waitressing job in NYC?

How can i get a waitressing job in nyc w/o experience?

  • im a 20 year old female interested in getting a job as a waitress in nyc. i would ultimately like to be a cocktail waitress because they make such good tips, but i know i would need experience in restaurant industry first. i have never worked in a restaurant before but i have worked in retail for the past year and prior to that, i worked in promotions which was really customer service-based. how can i overcome the lack of restaurant experience when i am applying to places? should i apply as a hostess first and tell them that i want to work my way up to waitress (so they see that i want to learn and advance in the business)? for example, i saw that a new, nice restaurant had a sign that they were hiring and they gave me an application that included questions about industry terms. some questions arent so bad because i can google the answers (such as 'name 3 white wine varietals') but others i dont know the answers to! such as: 'if a guest ordered a gin and tonic, what would your response be?' and 'if a guest ordered an espresso, what would your response be?'. idk what the right answers are! i would say 'sure, let me get that for you', but i think i would be wrong! im getting nervous! please give me some tips on getting my first waitressing jobs and if you can, tell me what the right answers are for the application! thanks!

Ok, my first real job was as a waiter. The answer to the question if a guest ordered a gin and tonic..... Do you have ID? Note...they might be underaged so you must check id on anybody. Not sure why they asked about espresso? that's weird. Personally you are the right age for waitressing....They always are looking for someone younger. Don't be nervous..it's just a waitressing job. Don't go to places that are too fancy because they most likely will be looking for waitresses w/ experience. Depending on what you are looking for i would go with a more casual restaurant job...they normally hire new people and train them. I would google for the espresso...something like dangers of espresso? if there are any? and then just say black or add something to it. You're right on the money in thinking to get a hostess job and work your way to waitressing...alot of restaurants will do that. I would do that first since you are new to waitressing....it can get very stressful and it might not be what you think it is.

your answer to the gin and tonic would be what kind of gin would you like? your answer to the espresso question would be would you like a cordial to go with that like sambuca or frangelico?

I would strongly suggest you get a job as a busboy (busgirl?) for a year and PAY ATTENTION to how the restaurant industry works while you're doing it, and then you can go out and get any waitressing/managing job you want. Sure, it's a year of low pay and hard work, but consider it to be on-the-job-training, like you're going to waitress school, and you'll also make a lot of industry friends and connections, too, so you'll be right there on the inside when something good comes along. If you don't get some experience before you jump in and become a waitress, you'll spend all your time "in the weeds" and the fact that you don't even know that expression proves that you're not ready to be a NYC waitress yet! Good luck!... ☺
