Where is the best place to start an organic French bakery in California?
-
I’d like to start an organic French bakery in California. There seems to already be quite a lot of bakeries in Northern California. Where do you think is the best place to start such a bakery (Northern versus Southern California, coast versus inland or a whole different state)? Thanks in advance for your answers

Answer:
I'd say some 'upscale' place. Southern Marin County (Fairfax, San Anselmo, Sausalito, etc). The Wine Country. Berkeley or the Rockridge district in Oakland. Downtown San Mateo. Palo Alto. Menlo Park. Los Altos. Mendocino. Maybe even Santa Cruz. I don't know as much about Southern CA, but there are some rich neighborhoods there too. La Jolla looked pretty good when I was down there. And Huntington Beach.

Huntington Beach is only nice next to the coast. When you go inland it's apartments, strip malls, cinder block walls and cookie cutter Edward Scissorhand-type neighborhoods. It's also next to Westminster, aka Little Vietnam and there are a million excellent French bakeries that would undersell you. Vietnam used to be French Indochina if you wonder why they have French bakeries. Newport Beach, Rancho Santa Fe, Silver Lake (Los Angeles), Palm Springs, Santa Monica, Venice Beach, Encinitas and Del Mar are all places that have high incomes and also people that live healthy lifestyles. Northern California has better weather and climate for baking bread. It can very hot and dry in the Fall or very hot and humid in the Summer in So Cal. The lack of a/c in so many So Cal locations also makes the thought of baking bread unpleasant. Don't forget that as a whole California is suffering tremendously from the downturn in the economy. High unemployment means people won't spend $6 for a loaf of bread.

I would think Pacific Palisades in SoCal would be a good place for that. High income, high priced homes, farmer's markets, etc. You might also consider Manhattan Beach. It really depends on how accessible the place is where there's a lot of foot traffic.

I would think that an upscale area would be best. I would recommend somewhere in Beverly Hills or in San Francisco. Also, La Jolla or Coronado in San Diego are both beautiful places where your bakery would be a perfect fit.
