Is it expensive to live in Newport, OR?

Where to find good live jazz in Newport Beach, CA?

  • Hi- I'll be in town next month on business, looking for the best places to go see live jazz, I'd prefer something small and intimate with food/drinks (not a concert hall, etc.), if anyone knows where to find the good stuff I would appreciate it.. btw if are there any musicians in Newport Beach reading this, it would be extra cool to get your thoughts on the local jazz scene.. Thanks -MM

  • Answer:

The two best jazz clubs I have been to in Orange County were Spaghettini in Seal Beach (near Newport Beach), and Steamers in Fullerton. Look for guitarist Matthew Von Doran. If he is playing anywhere nearby when you are in town, check him out. First-rate guitarist, his material (all original) is fantastic, and he consistently playes with very accomplished musicians. I have seen him live a dozen or so times. However, if you are able to trek north into LA County, there are some jazz venues that are truly world-class. They are: The Baked Potato (Studio City) - Since 1970, this wonderful hole in the wall has been serving up live jazz (mostly fusion) nightly. The musicians are primarily top shelf session cats who play there strictly for fun - cats like Jimmy Haslip of the Yellowjackets are regular performers there. Full bar and baked potatoes, with toppings ranging from the basic cheese and sour cream to marinated steak. Catalina (Hollywood) - Another hangout for the top level musicians. I have caught sets there with Marilyn Scott, Allan Holdsworth, the Yellowjackets, among others. Full bar and full kitchen. Rosalie and Alva's Performance Gallery (San Pedro) - This is a dance studio from the 1950s turned into an intimate jazz performance space. No kitchen or alcohol (there is a pretty decent Chinese restaurant across the street) but they do not charge for the water and coffee they serve. Generally the suggested donation is $15. This place has been a well kept secret but the word is starting to get out and some heavy hitters are playing there now. One of the most unique venues I have found. The Jazz Bakery (Culver City) - Nonprofit jazz venue in the shopping center that once was the Helms Bakery. Two sets nightly, advanced tickets highly suggested. Coffee and pastries available. Consistently good straight-ahead jazz. As for your second question, the jazz scene is alive and well in Los Angeles, enough so that there are more opportunities to enjoy world-class live jazz than I can afford to go to (I catch about 6 sets a month).

Balboa Bay Club / Resort has live jazz, haven't been as Newport isn't in my budget.
