What is THE best restaurant to eat at in Santa Monica?

• So I want to treat my family for a fine-dining experience sometime in the near future... I live in Los Angeles, and all I know for sure is that I want to eat at a restaurant that will be extremely memorable. I have also pinpointed that I would like the restaurant to be in Santa Monica (I'm aiming for a lovely outdoor dinner right next to the ocean...). Basically, I need recommendations! On either a) how to find a great restaurant in general or b) a great restaurant in Santa Monica. Because this dinner is going to be for a special occasion, I can safely say that money will NOT be an issue here. I'm aiming for a white-tablecloth, luxurious dining experience, actually. So... anybody know any really amazing places to eat in Santa Monica? I want a restaurant that is an experience within itself! As in, the atmosphere and physical appearance of the place is appealing... Thanks in advanced. :)

  Melisse is absolutely amazing and always ranked as one of the top restaurants in Los Angeles. However, there are not any outdoor, white table cloth, extremely memorable right next to the ocean restaurants in Santa Monica. While not the greatest of meals, and not outdoors either, but The Lobster right off the pier isn't bad and offers a view but lacks being a memorable occasion meal. My other suggestions would be One Pico Restaurant at Shutters Hotel or The Penthouse in the Huntley Hotel. The Penthouse is, as the name suggests, at the top of the hotel with great views while One Pico is just above the beach leaving you the feeling you're "right there".
