An idea for cosplay costume?

Would you go to a US cosplay cafe if...?

  • First, if you have no idea what a cosplay cafe, here's your starting point: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cosplay_restaurant I'm wondering how comfortable would you be going to a cosplay cafe if there were both male and female servers? Keep in mind that the environment of a cosplay cafe is a little more on the kinky and/or cute side. One of the reasons that they are typically one gender is the cuteness and comfort of the environment is supposed to be far more relaxing than a standard restaurant. That much would be defeated if the presence of some of them instead makes you uncomfortable. If they were all female would you be any more comfortable? If both genders were present, would you be more comfortable if the restaurant was divided in two so you can make your pick? How far is too far for exposure on a costume? A simple way to get to the point, is a typical "bunny" outfit acceptable to you (take into account both female and shirtless male versions)? (though this being America, that is probably the one outfit that won't be allowed due to the associated image of playboy) As you might guess, I'm considering the idea of starting one. If I proceed with the idea, it would be Colorado, if you're curious. However it is little more than mere consideration. It'll be successful only for the niche it fills. Most every other concept about a cosplay cafe seems like it would fail in America. Thank god for otaku.

I think both male and female servers will be a better idea. Remember, not only otaku will want to come to it; curious people wanting to try something new will be attracted as well. Having only female servers is reminiscent of Hooters. Dividing the restaurant would also be a bad idea, because then you may get customers who only come to ogle the waiters/waitresses. A bunny outfit would probably be unacceptable. People looking in might get the wrong idea. I like the costume idea though. Maybe you should have a different theme for each day. Monday would be yukas/hakamas, Tuesday would be maids and butlers, Wednesday could be a Neko outfit you could design yourself, etc. I do think this would have to be in a somewhat big city for this to work. I personally think Baltimore or any other city that hosts a big convention would be better, simply because the convention is there. (But maybe that's because I'm biased and love Baltimore) There are two other things I'd like to add. 1) Don't make it completely "KAWAII DESU NE!". I think it's completely fine to have them say basic things in Japanese such as "Hello, Thank You, Good Bye, etc" but you will lose customers if "weeaboo-ize" it. 2) Serve more food than just otaku fodder. Try things such as Rice Balls, Cooked foods, some noodles other Ramen. There's a channel where I live that I actually can thank the box for that has shows about Japanese Culture; including a cooking show. If there's a channel like that near you, you can use that to help. I REALLY like your idea however, and I would come if I didn't live so far away(everyone forgets about the east coast TT__TT). You just are going to have to be very careful with how you proceed with it.

I think the idea is HOT ! I don't think you'd have a long run in Colorado. For a 'Blue' state tastes run a little conservative here. Cutting edge venues that do well on either coast tend to fizzle here, just not enough long term support for them after the novelty wears off. Shotgun Willie's and P.T.'s have always done well so female staff with more 'exposure' might have some luck. The novelty of a 'Chip 'n Dale' staff probably wouldn't get enough play to last long in Denver or Colo. Springs, guys are too up tight to be around that and women won't spend the bucks to support it in the long term here.
