Hi, I work as a server in Boston, MA and I am on the process of moving to Austin, TX. I work at a fine dining steak house and was wondering what the best place to work in Austin would be... I am looking for a place were the food is expensive and people tip well. By the way what the average tip like in Austin? Please tell about your experience working as as server in Austin. Thanks!

Answer:
These are the best restaurants in town. See what part of town you want to live in and go from there. I competely agree with the guy above about you should look into Eddie V's, but I would go with Jeffrey's ...it is a little more exclusive. Depending on how good you are..you can get on average a 20%-25% tip. 1. Jeffrey's Restaurant 1204 W Lynn St , Austin , TX , 78703 An upscale eatery frequented by VIPs for its rotating menu of inventive and sophisticated New American cuisine. 2. Bellagio Italian Bistro 6507 Jester Blvd , Austin , TX , 78750 Fine, homespun Italian cuisine served to an upscale crowd in a serene setting. 3. The Emerald Restaurant 13614 W Hwy 71 , Austin , TX , 78738 Out-of-the-way spot off of Highway 71 boasts a cozy stone cottage, an outdoor garden and authentic Irish cuisine. 4. Vespaio Restaurant 1610 S Congress Ave , Austin , TX , 78704-3522 Inventive Italian cuisine in a setting reminiscent of a neighborhood trattoria. 5. Eddie V's Edgewater Grille 301 E Fifth St , Austin , TX , 78701 Beguiling seafood dishes in an upscale, clubby setting. 6. Truluck's 400 Colorado St , Austin , TX , 78701 Seafood and steak dominate this swanky Warehouse District eatery. 7. Green Pastures 811 W Live Oak St , Austin , TX , 78704 A genteel Old South dining room serves nouveau continental cuisine. 8. Shoreline Grill 98 San Jacinto Blvd , Austin , TX , 78701 A superior location overlooking Town Lake, doting service and fine, affordable seafood make this a favorite spot downtown. 9. Louie's 106 106 E Sixth St , Austin , TX , 78701 This downtown hot spot boasts a marriage of Mediterranean casual and continental refinement. 10. The Driskill Grill 604 Brazos St , Austin , TX , 78701 Creative New American fine-dining in a hotel that's a bastion of Old Texas.

For fine dining, I would first recommend exploring opportunities at Eddie V's Edgewater Grill (2 locations - north and downtown). The who's who of Austin's business and entertainment crowds dine their frequently, and a friend of mine worked their for several years and wouldn't leave because the tips were so good. She would clear anywhere from $175-$300 per night and often brought home much more on weekends. You may also want to check into 3 Forks, Vespaio, and Flemings, as these establishments also offer an upscale dining experience for high end crowds. Good luck in your move!

In addition to all the above, there is also this little restaraunt that is owned by Sandra Bullock, called Bess. I have been there and it's a little small, but the prices aren't, so this could be something worth trying out. It's on 6th st, about half way between Congress and Lamar.

Uchi is a trendy sushi place and very expensive. They need some good servers there because the service usually sucks. I don't know how easy it would be to get a job there though.

They will be located at: 309 E. 3rd Street Austin, TX 512-472-0220 You might want to call and see if you can get an interview!

I like several of the answers that have already been posted... but my favorite place to go here in town is Houston's... service there is always great...no matter who my server is... they always get good tips from us...

I would say Ruth Chris Steak House would be my first choice and Outback on 183 and Duval would be my second, 20% would be the standard tip in either of these two locations.
