Answer:
The Feed Store in College Park. They are very accommodating to large groups and have a private dinning room.

You are going to find it difficult to find any restaurant that will handle a group of 40 for prom in Atlanta. You either need to break it into smaller groups (maybe 2 groups of 20) when making the reservation or you need to make a group reservation to reserve a banquet room of some sort. Even then, you might find it hard to get a restaurant to take your group because you are a prom party which is notoriously bad for tipping properly. I suggest trying Maggiano's. They have a menu that pretty much caters to large groups, and it is more upscale than most casual Italian restaurants.

Howell Mill Felinis. I have been there with a party that big and there was room for us. Also the Felinis on Ponce has outdoor seating and the weather is getting better. It's a pizza place with a lot of beer on tap so its not fancy but the its no pizza hut. Maggianos will also accommodate you but you will then need to eat off a preset menu. Also you will need to make reservations and it will be ~$27 per person. Manuel's Tavern has a back room with lots of table but it is a tavern style restaurant and I am not sure if you need to call ahead and reserve it. My coworker raves about Agave and they say they can handle large groups. If you feel like chinese food try Pung Mei, they have a large banquet hall and I don't think that our group had to pay for it as we were just there for dinner. The food is great but be prepared to eat family style.

This place fills up fast around prom season so you have to make reservations early. Good food, great desserts and a beautiful old train depot that's been revamped, the setting is quite elegant for prom goers but the prices are very reasonable. http://www.osf.com/

What about getting a private room at Maggiano's or Capital Grille? Also, I have seen large prom parties go into Cheesecake Factory as well...
