What's wrong with HD dvd?

Following the lead of Circuit City, Best Buy is doing its best to console bitter HD DVD player owners who placed the wrong bet when buying a next-generation hi-def DVD player. In total Best Buy says it estimates a total of $10 million in gift cards will be distributed." What does this mean? Will DVD's be a thing of the past? If so, what is coming in and what will play the new thing?

    HD-dvd will be a thing of the past. Major companies have decided not to support that format. Regular DVD's will still be made along will Blu-rays. Everyone doesn't own a Hidef TV. DVD sales still beat HD-DVD and Blu-Ray combined. Oddly enough American Gangster is the number 1 selling HD movie and it's on a dieing format HD-DVD.

Like the old days when VHS and BETA were both being made people would normally buy one or the other. Eventually VHS won out and BETA pretty much faded away from the normal consumer's everyday use. The same thing has been happening recently between HD DVD and BlueRay. In this case BlueRay has just won the war and it was decided by its manufacturer that HD DVD would no longer be made. To appease all the people who had just bought the HD DVD Best Buy and Circiut City have decided to give gift cards. I guess it's a bit like a consolation prize for picking the wrong brand. By the way, HD DVD and BlueRay are not compatable. But, both are capable of playing standard DVDs.
