Answer:
Yes and no... normal players can not play the other version BUT, they do make players that play both... Be aware that the dual format players cost significantly more.

No. HD-DVD player cannot play Blu-ray disks, and a Blu-ray player cannot play HD-DVD disks. LG made a dual format player that can play both Blu-ray and HD-DVD disks.
