Where can I download movies in avi from for free?

Is there any legal site that I can download movies in avi or any other formats that I can burn to dvd?

I have been searching the net for a site that is legal to download movies from that I don't have to pay that much for them besides limewire for I don't know if downloading from them is legal or illegal I think it is iilegal even though I paid for the pro version of there program. I have found some sites like ZML.com but I read they are a ruissan company and they are not really legal I aslo found www.setyourdvd.com but I can't seem to find out if they are legal eather any ideas out there will be help full, for I don't want to download a movie and be busted by the movie police and sent to jail for illegal download.
