Do I need special speakers for a turn-table?

Need help setting up new Turntable to Speakers?

  • I'm looking to set up this turntable: http://www.amazon.com/Pioneer-PL-990-Automatic-Stereo-Turntable/dp/B00009QORL/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top I received it as a gift and need to figure out what I need for speakers to hook up to the Red/White plug in that came with it. Basically, there is a built-in "pre-amp", and there are only 2 cables coming out of the player, a power cord and a pair of AUX output cords (a red and white cable). I need some recommendations on what I can use that is below 50 dollars to get this working. Thanks

  • Answer:

you need a receiver to get it working. You can't just hook speakers up to it, you need something to convert the signal into sound like a receiver. Any cheap one will do.

A built-in preamp is good because most computer sound cards use a line level input, while turntable cartridges are mic level. The preamp raises mic level to line level. But it's still too low to drive speakers. You need an amplifier. And inexpensive amp is available from Radio Shack for around $25-$30. A receiver is just an amplifier with a tuner (radio, AM/FM) built into it. Either one will work as you just need the line level input on the back of it.

You need an amplifier, it doesn't have to be a receiver.
