Help with directv hd dvr's?

Please help with HD and digital TV set-up (Directv)?

  • I just bought an LG 37" 720p and a Samsung 32" 720 TVs. Here's some quick facts: I chose 720p because the store price was $699 for the LG and $499 for the Samsung (hard to pass that up). The LG is hooked up with HDMI using the Directv HD receiver. The Samsung is hooked up with HDMI using a Directv DVRHD receiver. The Samsung looks and sounds SO MUCH better than the LG. However, they both look sorta fuzzy and pixelized on most of the channels that are not HD. The HD looks great on the Samsung, but not that great on the LG. I've always been told that LG is an upper-tier brand. Am I doing something wrong and is there a way to get the best performance from both TVs. Thanks!

If I am understanding, you are saying the picture looks great on the Directv high def channels on the Samsung, but not so great on the LG and both TVs don't look very good on the standard def channels. First, did you look a the LG set in a store someplace and get them to put a standard def signal on it? If you did and what you are seeing at home is worse than what you expected to see, I'd make a warranty claim and let them look at the set. It is always possible there is something wrong with it. Top of the line sets will have some sort of scan line doubling system to try and make a standard def signal 480 scan line picture look as good as possible at 1080 (or 720). However, both sets are inexpensive 720 sets and they probably have a pretty basic system to scan up. I have a rather expensive Sony and it is hard for me to watch standard def broadcast content on it anymore as it does have that fuzzy appearance. So quite simply. There are limits as to how much a 480 signal can be enhanced and, it is never going to get much better no matter how much you might have spent. If you are using HDMI connections, then you are using the best connection there is so I have no more suggestions for you. Samsung sets are very highly rated and I see nothing in your description which would tell me there is anything wrong with your Sansung. I can not say that I have ever paid any or much attention to LG TVs though but I do not think they are up with Samsung or Sony... but how much worse they might be, I really do not know.
