Who knows about GPS system?

What's it called? an alternative system to GPS.?

  • Listened to Radio 4 (BBC) about 8 pm today. They were talking about an alternative technology to GPS. GPS uses satellites and has a problem if your inside a building with the signal. This other system doesn't use satellites. They explained that every computer that uses wireless equipment sends out a signal every minute or so, the signal carries information about the location of the computer. This alternative system uses the signal from wireless computer equipment to give the location of the person using the system. They've sent out thousands of people all over the world to map out these signals from peoples computers. Because of this, unlike GPS it has no problems with locating people inside buildings. Can't remember the name of the company or the system but would like to blog about it. Any info would be helpful.

Decca , it was switched off a couple of years ago , i only know because my guy worked at sea and it cost fisherman thousands to replace all their navigation equipment with GPS .

Try a map - it's made of paper and really easy to follow.

It is called cell-phone triangulation. Computers don't send any signals. However, cell phones need to connect to cell towers. So, when you have your cell phone on, by checking the position of the neighbor towers it can find where you are. It is used by google and it was used in the first iphone (before it got gps).
