Where can I get free ebooks for the sony reader?

Should I get the Kindle or should I keep my Sony Reader?

  • I haven't had any problems (for the most part) with my Sony Reader Touch Edition, but one of my friends brought their kindle in and was playing with it and reading and what not, and it just looked a lot better than my sony reader. There seemed to be no glare at all and it just seemed a lot more enjoyable to read. I've done a little bit of research and it looks like the kindle has a lot longer of a battery life compared to my reader (1 month vs 1 week) I've been especially busy since I got my reader, so I only have 4 books on it (I have a list of about 30 that I want to read though) Anyways I was just wondering if there were any opinions you wanted to share about this, and if you had any pros or cons about each. Oh, and the kindle I was considering was the wi-fi or the wi-fi +3g.

I have a Sony Reader (the PRS-600) as well as a Kindle. I find the Kindle to be both lighter and faster as well as being more comfortable to hold and read on. Downloading books from Amazon is a bit too fast and easy - I have 100+ books piled up on mine, all of them less than $5. The battery life is definitely better than the Sony. On the minus side, the Kindle feels cheaper than the Sony - the Sony is definitely more durable. The Kindle also doesn't support .epub format. Basically, it reads .mobi, .prc and .azw and .pdf, and that's it. It also has no external card slot for expansion. Playing music on it can be clunky as well. Also, the battery cannot be replaced by you. Mine is fine, but I gather you have to send it back in for battery replacement when the battery dies and it costs quite a bit. Personally, I prefer the Kindle despite the drawbacks, but you should know what you're getting into. As for wifi vs 3G, it depends upon how you plan to use it. The wifi version cannot connect to enterprise wifi. This was a problem for me, because I worked at a university and could not download or sync at the office because of this. The only place I could download or sync was when I used my home wifi connection. If you don't have wifi at home, or you want to download and sync anywhere, go for the 3G version.

I would stick with a Sony Reader Touch (PRS-650) if I already had one -- it's a great ereader. I'd save the money for one of the the next generation ereaders at this point. There are arguments to be made for either the Kindle or the Sony being better than the other, but it's really not a slam dunk in either direction... Both the Kindle 3 and the PRS-650 have the best E Ink displays: Pearl. The PRS-650 a bit more expensive, but you already paid that. Kindles 3's have WiFi (and/or 3G); PRS-650 has a SD card port. Sony has better direct PDF support as it uses the official Adobe Mobile PDF Reader. The PRS-650 has a sturdier frame (metal) than the Kindle. The PRS-650 supports EPUB and can do library borrowing right now; Kindle support for library lending comes later this year. The PRS-650 has a touch screen; Kindle does not. Neither are very good at apps and games and web browsing, but the Kindle has a slight edge in these non-reading functions. I might argue that you should buy a Kindle over a PRS-650 if you were looking for your first ereader or if you had an outdated one. However, I recommend that you stay pat with your PRS-650 and save your money for something that'll give you a substantial advantage beyond what you already have. .

I have an iPad mini-- an iPod touch with the free Kindle app on it. I have read dozens of books on it, and it fits in my pocket, and I can play games, check email, surf the web, play games, take pics and video, and more.

It's like you are a big envious

If you want a new toy, that's one thing. But being that you have a perfectly useful eReader already, I don't see much point in buying a Kindle too. It's not like it will enhance the books any. They'll still read the same. The fact that you don't find much time to read makes it an even sillier decision. Purely from a financial decision, it makes no sense to buy a Kindle.
