Why is it so hard to convert a VHS to DVD perfectly?

Can I can convert a vhs movie to dvd via a dvd recorder??

I have two different devices:An old VHS VCR and a seperate DVD Recorder.Can I connect my VHS VCR with my DVD Recorder and copy instantly vhs movies to dvd's?Just a scart cable would be ok for my job?I don't want to edit my vhs movies, I just want to copy them as they are.
