How long will an inverter last on a car battery?

Will a 400-watt power inverter hurt my car battery?

  • I'm about to go on a trip and I wasn't sure if I was to have a 400-watt power converter in my car for a small tv and playstation 2 would it hurt my car battery?

    NO, I work at radioshack and as long as your car is running and your altenator is working properly you will be fine. Be careful though, Most 400 watt inverters will only do up to 150 watts from the cigarette lighter. To get the full 400 watts it has to be hooked directly to the car battery. Check out the manual to be sure, but a ps2 and a small tv should run off of 150 watts. Have a great trip. Any problems stop into any radioshack along the way.

It will reduce the life of your car battery if you do not run the engine of the car often enough to keep the battery charged. In other words, it is like leaving the headlights on (in cars not equipped for automatic shut off) and draining the battery when the car is not running.

It will be fine if your car engine is running but you can use 400 watt inverter without engine running for a while too. Well.. heck i even used 1000watt converter on my car battery with out engine running but this inverter came with voltage detector. When it detected low voltage from battery then it will sound an alarm and shut it self so it doesnt drain the battery empty.
