What is some surf technology?

E- reader help! Technology for elders?

  • One of my family bought a KOBO Vox for my father recently. He's visually impaired, so needs help in seeing things on screens, but was fairly confident that he could use an e-reader, as he can surf the 'net a bit. We don't have wi-fi, and he's getting more and more frustrated that he can't just push a button and get a book. I have tried to explain to him that he needs to set the Kobo up, to have an account, and then we can connect up the family computer to the Kobo to download books. He doesn't understand this, has accused me of being deliberately 'obtuse' and is now livid with rage at the family having spent money on something he wants to 'throw at the wall. Or you'. Please, somebody, tell me how they've dealt with seniors thinking that everything is now one-button technology. I can't keep on trying to find simple ways to explain, when there is no single, simple answer.

  • Answer:

I have a similar problem with my mum and her mobile phone, explaining there are many ways to get the same result. I'd say patience, tho that ain't much help. Try to show him thing that he will understand easily and give him a sense of reward and lead up to the more difficult stuff later. Even then this may not 'help' and it may be one of these things you have to live with, but don't give up and (tho I hate the word) try a bit of 'lateral' thinking. Best of luck.
