Question about whether to buy DVDs now or not?
-
I want to buy several DVD collections for my kids - movies and shows I used to enjoy when I was a kid like Brady Bunch, Hawaii 5-o, the Disney movies like Escape to Witch Mountain, Herbie, etc. I don't want to spend money now though if DVDs are going to be obsolete in 5 years or less. I need to be able to play these DVDs for at least the next 10 years or so. I'm a late adopter of technology, so it's ok if there's something better out there soon. I probably won't buy it. I just don't want to get stuck with DVDs that I can't play. Thanks for your info.

Answer:
Your question is of decent concern. However, engineers have noticed how people do not like having to completely re-do their collections to match new technology. Devices (media players, game systems, etc) are now be made backwards-compatible, meaning it can play the generations of media before it. For example, the new Blu-Ray players will only play Blu-Ray movies in the high-def quality it was designed to play. However, if you put a regular DVD into it, it will play it in normal DVD quality. So to answer your question directly, go ahead and buy the DVDs. The only thing you'll ever have to worry about is TVs losing the plug-in for your current DVD player, but I don't think that will even happen just because Blu-Ray players can be hooked up using the same plugs. Even if TVs do lose the plugs, someone will make an adapter so you can still watch the DVDs you love :) And for movies, may I suggest a great Disney classic, "The Apple Dumpling Gang"? I love it.

Hi bugbeacon2, I think you will be safe for 10 years. I believe the HD DVD's will eventually become hybrid units capable of playing standard DVD's and HD/Blu Ray DVD's. Norm

I'm sure you will be fine. It will be a loooooong time before DVD's go away. Heck, look how long the CD has been around and you can still find some stuff new on casette. Besides, whatever happens you can bet that your old DVD's will still play on the newer machines. the Blue Ray player does that now and even upconverts thems to better quality. weeder
