How to make AC work if the line voltage is low?

  • I am from India....let me lay out the details of my problem I am using a 1.5 Tn split AC for my room. My problem is that as summer sets in the voltage in my area drops ....(which is whats happening now).....this is the second year i am using the AC and this has happened last years summer too. So when this occurs, the AC will not get switched on......more specifically the fan becomes on, and when the condensor tries to switch on, it gets cut off. Since my room is on the top floor -its very hot even until late night and I need AC to sleep.....So even though i may need AC during the daytime, its the nightime thats important to me....and it is in the night that the voltage drops too much so that the AC will not get switched on. To summarise....when i need AC most...thats when the voltage is the lowest and AC will not work I initially used a regular stabilizer....when i found that the AC is not getting switched on.....i contacted the dealer and he suggested me to get a stablizer which works in "wide ranges" or voltage(a stablizer with a step up function).....he game me a stablizer and said that it will work even upto a voltage of 120 Volts!!!!! (Its a 4 KVA stablizer.....) Might i also add that before the 120 volt thing i tried a "low voltage" stabilizer from VOLTAS(which was supposed to work even at 160-180 Volts....it was when this did not work that he suggeted the 120 Volt stabilizer.....the brand is some local thing called "SHALIMAR") Well whatever thing i used nothing worked......of course the SHALIMAR thing worked by 1 AM in the night sometimes, while the VOLTAS thing mostly never worked!!!!! Might i also add that i have a 0.75 Tn AC in a room downstairs....it has a 3 KVA VOLTAS stabilizer (its a window AC fro O General) and it works most of the times!!!!! So AC will work....i just need to know what i need to make it work!!! Blaming the dealer and the Electricity board apart.....can someone help me ....and give me some ideas to get the AC to work.....money is not an issue(Dont get me wrong here....money is an issue to me allright.....but so is a good nights sleep-right???) So guys plz help me with some ideas.....what do i need??? Will some form of AC Stabilizer work for me???? (if so what brand...specifications???) Can i make it work with a reasonable sized Generator????(If so brand? Specification?)

  • Answer:

You must use the "Servo Motor Automatic Voltage Regulator/ Stabilizer" that use a "Transformer " like this one in the pic. This type is the best for Air Condition. They automatically step-up the fluctuating voltage from 110 volt and raise it to 220V-240V operating capacity of an aircon. They are heavy duty type that use a large "transformer" with high gauge copper wire wound in an iron core. This device is very heavy in terms of weight because of the transformer construction inside. SVC automatic voltage regulator use continuously variable auto-transformer, buck and boost transformer, AC synchronous motor, IC loop control system. It features small waveform distortion, high efficiency, and high power factor. It can be widely used in places where voltage fluctuates. http://www.tradekey.com/product_view/id/1023138.htm I think SHALIMAR type voltage stabilizer is a low capacity voltage stabilizer and is not compatible for Air Con's heavy duty operating condition. By the look of it they use an "Electronic Circuit type" of voltage stabilizer with IC parts and components, usually used in Computer and other Electronic device. Voltage Stabilizer of this kind is not capable of handling high power voltage and current needed to drive a big motor compressor/pump found on aircon and refrigerator. http://www.indiamart.com/company/1837980/products.html#voltage-stabilizers Any brand is not an issue as long as it is made of "Transformer and servo motor type" voltage regulator. Look with a higher wattage rating like this one http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004ROW7P6/ref=olp_product_details?ie=UTF8&me=&seller= Using a generator together with the mains line will overload your aircon and any appliance in the house and destroy them all.
