Why am I still getting static with an auxiliary cable?

Why are cable customers paying for digital TV when everyone else is getting for free?

  • Since the conversion to digital is free (all you need is the box), why is the cable company continuing to charge customers for the service? Shouldn't it be free for cable subscribers also? They should only be charging for the premium channels. I don't understand this whole thing.

  • Answer:

It is true that you can sometimes get more channels over digital airwaves, but they are not necessarily the same as what you could get over cable. For example, on analog I could get NBC on channel 3. On digital I can get regular NBC programming on channel 3.1, 24 hour NBC weather on channel 3.2, and Spanish NBC on 3.3. You are not going to get cable channels like Disney, HBO, etc. over the airwaves with an antenna and converter box. Another consideration is that digital airwave broadcast is either working 100% or 0%. Unlike analog, it does not get grainy, it just goes black when there's a weak signal. At my house, weather sometimes affects what channels I can get.

Because cable is in the business of charging you for the convenience of not having an antenna. It is only free if you have your own antenna. Yes, if you don't want to pay cable, it is your right to not pay them anymore*, and get an antenna and get TV for free. *Unless you are currently engaged in a commitment/contract of some sort.
