You can't just use a VCR, a DVD player and a TV, since a DVD player doesn't record DVDs, it only plays them back. You need either a DVD recorder, or a computer with a capture device and a DVD burner. The easiest way is to buy a DVD recorder. If you only want to use it to transfer tapes, you can get a good deal on an older model that has an analog tuner, or you can get one that has no tuner. These models will not be able to record a different channel than what you are watching, but if you have cable TV and don't record over the air channels, that may not be an issue for you. You should be able to get a DVD recorder with an analog tuner or with no tuner for under $100. I paid about $50 for mine. DVD recorders with digital tuners begin at around $150 (with an SD tuner) or $225 (with an HD tuner). Once you have a DVD recorder, you'll need some blank recordable DVDs. Check with your manual on which type of DVDs to buy, but usually DVD-Rs work with more older DVD players than DVD+Rs, so if you're planning to send the DVDs to someone else, I'd try the DVD-Rs first. Then you just connect the VCR video out and audio out to the DVD Recorder's video in and audio in using the RCA cables you already have (the red, white and yellow cables), and connect the DVD audio and video out to your TV. Start the VHS tape, and record the VHS onto your DVD recorder using the record button, or the on screen menu. Note that pre-recorded VHS tapes with copy protection will not be properly copied. This only works with your own VHS tapes or commercial VHS tapes that aren't copy protected. After finishing the video transfer, you'll have to finalize the DVD. Refer to your instruction manual for details, but it's usually a menu option somewhere near the menu choice to record a disc.

Best buy. They sell a device that you plug in to your computer. and you plug your vcr in to the device. the software tells u when to press play. so the video gets digitized and sent through this device in to your hard drive and software converts it in to a video. Dazzle makes good video converters. Just remember that you will have to play the whole tape and normal speed. If your movie to taped is 1 hour then it takes an hour to convert it. you can also use this device to record from your TV to your computer. Its a multi use device. http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8853822&st=dazzle&type=product&id=1209166068566

You need a DVD Recording Player. Otherwise you can buy a video capture card and use the computer to capture the videos, then burn it using the DVD Recorder on your computer, if you have one. This would be harder though that just using a DVD Recorder from the store.

I suggest using a video transfer service. StashSpace.Com is a good one and it's only $6.95 per tape. I know there is a way to do it at home with a DVD recorder, but a regular DVD player won't work cause you need to actually burn the video onto the DVD.
