What channels will I be able to watch with the digital box converter?

What kind of Digital Converter Box do I need?

  • I know that about a year ago, all TV stations started changing to a digital form of broadcasts. Since I never watch TV, I didn't bother getting a DTV (converter box) with the government coupon when they did this, now I'm thinking about buying one, but have little to no idea what I need to get it working. Assume I do not have cable/satellite of any sort & wish to get the regular TV channels to watch on my TV. Will a DTV connect to my TV and let me get the regular stations (2, 6, 8 etc.) or will I need an antenna in addition to connect to the DTV? The TV I have, that I wish to watch TV on is a flat-screen LCD, do I still need to get an analog-to-digital or is there a simpler version of converter box? Is the connection from the box to the TV via red/white/yellow cable, or is it HDMI? Thank You for any advice/input.

  • Answer:

If you have an old tv, you need a digital converter box and antenna. You can also use a free to air receiver as a digital converter box: http://www.sathookup.com/satellite-tv/store/fta-free-to-air.html

You are correct. Any television that is a big tube or bulky on the back is a analog television and requires the purchase of a digital converter box. You will need a digital converter box for about $59.99 that plugs into your older television by composite cables (yellow, red and white) plugs. There won't be any HDMI connections. You will need to get a good indoor or outdoor antenna. Depending on where you live, some televisions stations will have a weak signal coming to your house and so the most important thing is to get a good antenna. All channels that you will receive on your digital converter box is free and won't cost any monthly fees. If you have a flat screen LCD I would assume it already has a built in digital TV tuner. All you have to do is to get a good antenna for that television. You would not need to purchase a digital converter for that television and so no connection or cables is required. Just go to your setup on your television and do a channel scan for all your channels. Remember once you plug your converter box to you old television go to your system menu and choose setup and do a channel scan which will scan for all channels in your area.

In the first place and for general information, only about 1/3 of the stations went digital, the other 2/3 are still analog and will be for the near foreseen future-due mostly to economics. The only ones that had to go digital were the major networks and their affiliates. Therefor, most digital boxes and all later TVs including your flat screen have both a digital and an analog tuner. There are boxes for older TVs with a built in antenna system that works quite well if the local now digital stations have a strong enough signal in ones area. In your case all you need is an antenna. You can try to use just a pair of so called "rabbit ears" and if the signal strength in your area is adequate then that is all you need. Other than that you may need an outside TV antenna.

Yes, you will need an antenna. >is a flat-screen LCD< It sounds as though the TV is new enough to already have a digital tuner in it, in which case you need nothing but an antenna. >Is the connection from the box to the TV via red/white/yellow cable, or is it HDMI< If you should need a converter box, the connection type they use will certainly NOT be an HDMI. HDMI connections exist only in high def TVs, which thus do not need a converter. It could be either a pass through coaxial connection or a composite video connection.
