What is the best GPS system available?

What kind of GPS system ...?

  • i want a GPS system that can read out the street names to turn and stuff.. i've been reading the reviews on a few of them and found that the tomtom's just tell you the distnace to turn but not the street names.. and im not really sure which one to get can someone recommend a good GPS system?

    Garmin is the best gps system in my opinion. You may pay a little more for it over Magellan and Tomtom but it is worth is faster route calculations, finds the satellites faster, and more points of interests, etc...If you do not get Garmin get either Magellan or TomTom maybe maybe Navigon if you get off brands they may be cheaper, but if the company isn't well establish if they stop making gps systems or updates your GPS will be obsolete. The feature you are talking about it Text to Speech- a GPS without text to speech will say something like"turn left in 300ft" and you'll see the street address on the screen; text to speech will say "turn left in 300ft onto Spring Creek Drive" eliminating the need to look on the screen. This feature is on all "higher" models of GPS. So Tomtom has it just not on its "lowest/entry" model. Regardless that TomTom does have text to speech I recommend Garmin over it. Starting at the Garmin Nuvi 350 all the models have text to speech. None of the lower models do with the exception of Nuvi 255 and Nuvi 270. its true tom tom does not read out street names out to you but tomtom is the most user friendly GPs out there while garmin does read out the street name it is alot harder to use while your driving do not buy a Magellan beacsue there a european based company and do not have very good maps of the us and canada

both other answers are good, but the Garmins are indeed the best bang for your money. The Nuvi series Garmins do speak the names like you want. They have Nuvi's that run from $100-$800 and more depending on your needs. Some you can input info into, and have bluetooth, some are more basic like the Nuvi 250's. I have the Nuvi 250 and love it. I got my wife one for her car as well. She really likes the pink color of the unit and the roads are pink as well. Garmin also offers great web service, so if you have any questions you can email them, or look on there web site for tech tips if you need. Good luck. You won't be disappointed in these models.

I am suggestion Garmin and TomTom GPS. If you buy a Garmin, choose a model that ends with a "5", like 205, 255, 265, 755, or 765, is a newer model (old models is end with "0" like 200, 350, 360, 760, etc). The new model upgrades from the older model series and have more feature such as widescreen, mp3, etc. I'd recommend a Garmin 255W (same as 205W but reads street names instead of just saying "turn left" or "turn right). All the major brands: Garmin, TomTom and Magellan offer GPS models that read street names. That capability is called "text-to-speech." Just look for that in the model descriptions.
