If I have a VCR/DVD player can I record something from a VHS tape to a CD?

NO. If you have a VCR/DVD Burner, then you could.

Maybe, Commercial VHS tapes have copy protection on them. You can make the copy, but you'll find the top and bottom are "dark". You could copy a home video though.

You can only record from from VHS to DVD is you CD/DVD player is also a recorder. Check the manual or where you purchased it or the manufacturer.

VCR's are Video Cassette Recorders. They've always been able to record. There were a few video cassette players made, in an effort to get price down, that would only play pre-recorded tapes, but the small price difference didn't really do anything for sales. DVD's came out as players, only, and it's only been recently that DVD recorders have become available. When buying a combo unit, it's crucial to note whether the DVD part is a player or recorder. When it's called a VCR/DVD recorder, BOTH sides can record in either direction. But if it's a VCR/DVD player, then the DVD portion is a player only and cannot record. The answer to YOUR question is no.

If the DVD side of your player has the record button you can record your VHS tapes to a DVD. But only VHS tapes you recorded yourself.
