I have a blu ray DVD player with USB. What format do the files have to be in to watch films from the USB port?

Usually AVI or MPG. Look in the manual or Google your model number.

Not many play MKV files and RAR is not a video file, have you tried extracting the film from the RAR file as they are usually in AVI format and most players play them. You will need to download WinRAR to unpack them, it is free but you will need to ignore the nag screens to buy it.
