How do I dispose of batteries safely?

How do you dispose of single-use batteries?

  • Does anyone have any suggestions for disposal of single-use batteries, i.e. AAA, AA, C, D & 9 Volt batteries? We used to just throw them away in our trash, but we don't want to do that anymore because of the harm they cause to the environment. Any suggestions?

  • Answer:

Disposible alkaline batteries are not usually recycled and are safe to go into the garbage. They do not harm the environment any more than normal garbage does. It used to be the common battery AA, C, D, etc contained mercury but now they are 99.9% mercury free. Rechargeable batteries should be recycled.
