Xenon flashes are currently brighter and time tested in photography. They rely on a ~330V flash capacitor which is quite dangerous if handled improperly. The size of the capacitor generally dictates the overall power of the xenon flash. However, recent progress with LEDs has allowed the brightness of LEDs to come close to Xenon (especially when used in small devices such as camera phones). LEDs are generally more energy efficient, much much smaller and run at a lower voltage. I found this link that seems to imply that LEDs may be more commonly found in cameras of all types. http://www.bounceflashcamera.com/technical
