Why do TV's sound louder in other rooms?

How do I hook up 2 TVs off one cable box w/out losing sound when I turn off one of the TVs?

  • I basically have both my HD TVs showing the exact same image from my cable hd-dvr set top box. With one receiving a HDMI and the other a coaxial cable. The purpose is to simulate having a cable hd-dvr in my bedroom TV at night before going to bed when I'm not in my living room which holds the cable box. And I know I have to maintain the cable box on so that it can transmit the feed to the bedroom TV at night when one of the TV's is off, however I lose the audio on my bedroom TV when I turn off the TV with the cable box. Let me explain the hookup: I have the coaxial cable running out of the cable box to the bedroom tv while having the HDMI running out of the cable box to my livingroom tv (where my settop box is) It works great with one exemption: for some reason when I turn my tv only from my livingroom where the HDMI is connected to the cable box, my bedroom tv loses audio. This only happens when I turn off the main TV and I don't get why. I know I could run a splitter out from the box using coaxial to both tv's... but I want to have my living room show FULL HD while settling for a cable fed tv image in my bedroom. But of course dont want to lose any audio when the tv w/ the set top box is turned off. Any answers on why this happens and a possible solution? THANKS.

  • Answer:

Have you tried disconnecting the HDMI cable from the cable box? If doing that cures the sound problem, the reason is that the main TV has to "talk back" to the cable box through the HDMI cable in order for the sound to be applied to the coaxial output. [Even though it doesn't make logical sense, it may be true.] In any event, the cable company should be able to tell you what to do about the problem.
