How do i transfer pics from my cell to cpu w/o buying a program for it?

have the usb cord and it fits the phone but when i plug it in nothing happens. A "ping" sounds but no wizard or anything comes up. I can't find anything but paying to send them over my phone to my email. I'd prefer to not buy a program to do this. With my digital camera i just plug it in and my CPU bring up a program to get the pics but that doesn't work w/ my cell. If i do have to buy a program can you suggest one? Again i'd prefer a free way since i don't want to do anything fancy w/ them but put them on my PC. Motorola v323 phone Windows xp PC
