How to keep socket alive?

Why does my Socket Switch keep tripping out all of a sudden?

  • In the last week or so, my socket breaker switch keeps tripping out. I have just bought a coffee machine and it seems to be doing it since then !! I have unplugged a few things....Sometimes it's every 10 minutes, sometimes it's ok for a day or so !! HELP PLEASE!!

  • Answer:

Damp? Faulty insulation on the wires? Faulty coffee machine? You need an electrician if you can't answer these questions.

Sounds like you have already isolated the cause. Either the wiring in the coffee maker or more likely, the plug or socket. Start with plug and socket and make sure all connections are tight.

Depends whether it's the circuit breaker or the RCD that's tripping. If it's the circuit breaker then it's probably because the circuit is overloaded, a coffee machine uses quite a lot of power so if you have other power hungry appliances on at the same time then this could cause it. If it's the RCD then it suggests that there'sa fault somewhere, either your new coffee machine's faulty or there's a fault somewhere in your wiring. I'm an electrician so e-mail me if you want any more help with this.

coffee pots and hair dryers draw alot of watts too much wattage (extreme example turning on 50 100 watt lights in one circuit would be too many) on one circuit will draw too many almost as if it was a short circuit you should for instance turn off the coffee pot if the microwave is needed for a few minutes if it is in the same circuit you cant always think that it is just the one outlet that is doing it in a typical kitchen there are only 2-3 seperate circuits so if coffee and fridge is on same circuit might draw too many watts

its more likely that the socket has gone faulty due to the extra power taken by the coffee machine. what has happened is more likely to be the live and neutral or earth wires inside the socket have melted together and as a result are short circuiting when ever an appliance is connected and the wires heat up. get an electrician or a experienced diy person to do it, its not a difficult job.

sounds like its overloading, i have double socket that does that, plug one item in ok, plug two then it just tripps out. Not sure of the answer, but sure someone will know

You have an overload somewhere. Unplug the coffee machine first, if thats not it, go on down the line.
