What would be the best solar powered lights to use?

Can you use normal batteries in solar powered lights?

  • Hello, I have these solar powered garden lights that I've had for about 4 years. However, I noticed that they aren't as bright as they used to be, and some of them don't even turn on anymore. I assured myself that they all work by trying the batteries of the working on the dead ones. What I would like to know is instead of using low-voltage batteries designated for solar powered lights, can I just use regular non-rechargeable batteries? If I do, will they charge? Is hazardous to do that, or is it a low enough voltage to be safe when the sun comes out? OR, can I use normal rechargeable batteries? I would like to know my best option, and i do not want to get new lights because the ones I have are quite durable and went through a lot, but WILL see better days. Any help will be greatly appreciated, Thank You!

  • Answer:

no, you cannot use normal - alkaline - batteries in solar lights. The solar panel on top of the light is used to recharge the battery when the sun is out and then there is a light sensor that turns on the LED and the charger off. By putting alkaline batteries in the light, you will be trying to charge the battery and alkaline batteries cannot be recharged, the seals will fail and the battery will leak, and will destroy the light.

You can replace the original rechargeable batteries with commonly available NiMH rechargeables. Even if you could somehow disable the solar charging while maintaining the auto on function (which uses the same solar cell), you would find that alkalines would only power your lights for a few days at most. Any atttempt to recharge non rechargeable batteries will eventually cause them to leak. I doubt if they would explode since the charging current is relatively low. Don
