How to connect my VCR to my computer?

How can I connect a VCR player to play through my computer monitor?

  • So I have one of those players that has VHS and DVD playing capability. I want to be able to play VHS tapes and DVDs through it and be able to see it on my computer monitor, and obviously hear the sound through my surround system. Can I buy a PCI card with RCA inputs? Or do I have to have a VGA converter to be able to play the video straight into the monitor? Or is there some other way this is accomplished? Also prefer to spend as little as possible.

  • Answer:

You can get a VGA tuner box. It will let a VGA monitor have most of the same inputs a TV has. It uses your PC speakers for sound, and have a passthrough to use with your PC still. Or yes, you can get a PCI-E or USB tuner with A/V input. That also has the benefit of being able to record the VHS tapes to your computer, to make DVDs, or arcive files on an HDD. To play DVDs, you should play them directly on your computer, through your DVD reader and DVD playback app. Another option, if you are in the market for a new monitor, is to get a TV set instead, which has PC and A/V inputs.
