What is a good reason for working in retail?

What is the actual reason for an electrical device not working when it has been in contact with water?

  • Okay, sounds like a stupid question but why do electrical devices actually stop working if they have been wet? My old phone has been through the washing machine 3 times and survived (I know, I should be careful). However, I bought a new phone and this time when it went through the wash it stopped working (It made buzzing sounds when turned on but the screen would ot turn on). Yeah, I know I shouldn't be so careless but unfortunately I have... So what exactly stops a device working when it is washed/wet with water.

  • Answer:

The water creates short circuits. Sometimes, after it dries out (which can take a while) it will start working again, provided no parts were blown out by the short circuit. Also, some parts may be sensitive; if water gets into the display, it may damage it. Your old phone may have a different kind of screen or it may be more waterproof.

Other answers

Water contains impurities and it acts as a conductor, and then the electricity goes places it should not go, shorting out various components.

Water allows electrolosys to happen, which can eat component traces, if not the conductivity of solder.
