Plug Headphones into TV?

If I plug a 3.5mm jack extension into a tv without headphones, does it stop sound reaching the speakers?

  • Basically, if I plug a 3.5mm jack male - female extension cord into a headphone slot in my TV, but I don't plug headphones into the female end, will the sound still go to the TVs in-built speakers , or will the extension cord make the TV think there's headphones plugged in, subsequently diverting the sound to the headphones (that aren't there)?

    Usually it works that way. A simple way to test this is to plug some normal headphones into the headphone jack - if the sound from the speakers goes away, it will do the same thing with the extension cord alone. Bradley - As I said above, it does not matter whether you plug the headphone or an extension - both will cut out the speakers. Another way around this is to get a home theater receiver and speakers - it will connect to the TV's audio output and it will have a headphone jack. A bit of an expensive solution but if you set it up right, the sound from your TV will be greatly improved and you will have a convenient headphone jack on the front of the receiver..

It depends how your TV works, but most do cut the speakers out, one way or another, most likely with a switch or plug presence sensor in the jack. There may be an auto/manual setting, if the control is done in software, rather than the jack switch actually opening the speaker leads.

Some but not all devices are equipped with an audio/headphone jack that have a set of electrical contacts in them that will open the circuits going to the speakers when a plug is inserted.
