DVD Burning: How can I fit a 4-hour show on a 2-hour DVD? Or, how can I record a show onto more than one DVD?
-
My laptop (HP DV2000) came with Windows DVD Maker and Roxio's MyDVD Basic V9 software. I record my favorite TV shows for later viewing and burning. Unfortunatley, both software programs showed that only two hours of video was going to fit on a standard DVD (4.7 GB). Can some one please let me know what I need to do? I need to burn the shows but they are bigger than the DVD capacity. Is there a way to break the show onto more than one DVD? Do premium DVD burning software solve this problem automatically? P.S. I only use blank DVD-R because they are the only ones that work with my regular DVD recorder. Thanks...

Answer:
You can try a program called "DVD Shrink". It's a very good freeware program. You can download the latest version here: http://www.softpedia.com/progDownload/DVD-Shrink-Download-4128.html It allows you to take a regular uncompressed DVD (around 8 GB) and compress it to allow backup to a 4.7GB DVD-R. You can manually control the compression rate, and even remove unwanted parts (movie trailers, special features etc) to maximize the main movie quality. I've found that even compressing by as much as 50% still yields a reasonable result, roughly comparable to a regular VHS image.

The best program I've found to use is actually two programs, you can get them both from http://www.slysoft.com you can use the AnyDvd software to remove the protection on the DVD and then the CloneDVD program to burn a copy of the disk. I'm not encourageing you to copy copyrighted material I'm just telling you where the software is and how it works. The CloneDVD program will allow you to remove parts of the movie you don't want, like all the trailers and other crap and just jump straight to the menu for the movie, either way you can keep it all or remove what you don't want the program will compress the video and allow it to fit on the standard 4.7gb DVD and the quality isn't any different than that of the original version.

You may convert your DVDs to DivX or XviD or WMV. After conversion a standard movies will be about 700 mb (CD-R size) instead of 5 or 9 GB (Video DVD sizes). Try to use AVS Video Converter from AVS Video Tools http://www.dvdvideosoft.com/avs-video-tools.htm The program is very simple. Read the step by step guide here: http://www.dvdvideosoft.com/guides/avs/video-DVD-to-AVI-DivX-XviD-WMV-MOV-RM-video.htm

I suggest Total Video Converter which split the videos automactically. It is a good converter and burner as well http://www.effectmatrix.com/
