What are the DVD and Blu-Ray Region Codes?

DVD and other region codes in Australia?

  • I intend on purchasing a CD and DVD with region code 2 (Japan) for use in Australia (region code 4). Firstly, do CDs have region code restrictions, and secondly will the DVD be able to be played on a DVD player here, or from any optical drive on a computer?

  • Answer:

Audio CDs have no region codes. You can play the DVD on a region hacked or region free DVD player, if it supports internal NTSC to PAL coversion. Many that can be hacked or are region free support that. You need to set TV out to PAL. You can play on the computer no problem.

Other answers

You only get five chances with changing the region code on a PC's DVD player after that it's "stuck" on your last choice and needs a factory reset. DVD players can be made to be region free by entering a code on the remote. This code is model dependent and only seems to work mainly on non-US models. CDs are not region coded.
