What's the difference between ooma phone device and magicjack?

• I am considering of changing my phone service to ooma or magicjack. I would like to know your input, the difference between these two. Should you need to have your internet power on all the time with magicjack?

  Ooma has several advantages over magic jack. Some of these features have a cost and some don't but I'll just list them: 1)Ooma hooks up to your internet connection/modem. Your computer does not need to be on. So, you need an internet connection, but you don't need a computer. With Magic Jack your computer must be on. 2)Ooma can take your existing phone number and transfer (port) it to the ooma system. Two months ago I had a landline in my house and my phone number was 123-4567. I no longer have a landline-I do not pay a phone bill- but my number is still 123-4567. With Magic Jack you have to pick a new phone number. 3)Amazingly, with ooma you can choose to use it with a landline. My mom chose to keep her landline (she downgraded to the lowest rate available) but she likes the added security that if her internet connection or her power goes out, she can still make and receive phone calls. The system automatically switches over. 4)Ooma can control up to four separate phone numbers. The other features for the Ooma & magic jack are similar and I think the magic jack is still a good deal. But my rule of thumb with new technology is that is should make my life better. And waiting for the computer to boot up before I make a call is not an improvement. Also, there are so many phone options now I would just say if you have an old fashioned landline and are paying $20-$100 a month well, then, that's just crazy.
