Will my standard DVDs work on a Blu-Ray player?

  • I'm looking at buying a Blu-Ray player, but I'm just curious . . . will the dozens of standard, non-Blu-Ray DVDs that I've bought over the years still play in the Blu-Ray player? I'm just trying to figure out if it's like having to upgrade your vinyl to CDs. I'm assuming, however, that you can't play Blu-Ray DVDs on a standard DVD player. Also, will Blu-Ray DVDs play on my computer? It's a Lightscribe DVD player/burner, so I'm not sure.

  • Answer:

Yes they will. It can play both, Blu-Ray and Standard DVDs. However you can't play Blu-Ray discs in a standard DVD player. I'm not sure about the computer though. Hope this helps.

[edit] Backward compatibility Though not compulsory, the Blu-ray Disc Association recommends that Blu-ray Disc drives should be capable of reading standard DVDs and CDs for backward compatibility.[71] A few early Blu-ray Disc players released in 2006 could play DVDs but not CDs (the LG BH100, Pioneer BDP-HD1, and Sony BDP-S1)[72][73][74]
