Why are sale and property taxes regressive taxes?

How will I know if my landlord owes property taxes or if the house is up for sale?

  • Answer:

There will be a notice published in the newspaper by your municipality if they are putting the place up for public auction. At least here in Ontario, Canada, anyone can do a property search, and the municipalities do register outstanding property taxes against the property - especially if they are planning to seize the property. Usually if the house if actually up for sale, by a real estate agent, and a sign goes up. You would also be notified by the landlord, since they have to give you a certain amount of notice (24 hours here) before they can show your rental unit.

Go to a title company and order a title report or visit the tax assesors website or office in your area. To find out if it is for sale, contact a local Realtor and give them the address for them to look it up. If it's not listed on their Multiple Listing Service, you'll have to ask the Landlord.
