How do I get my landlord to let us have a 6 month lease instead of a year long lease?

I asked the landlord for a 6 month lease because I just move to my area and was looking to buy a house. He offered the 6 month lease but I had to pay extra for it. It was $50 but that worked for me.

If your landlord is alright with it, you can post the apartment on Craigslist.org and other free sites and basically sublet for the rest of the 6 months. I would find very reputable people though because I believe your name would still be on the lease, and although their names would be added on you might still be held partially responsible if there are any damages incurred while they are staying there. I NEVER lease a property for less than 18 months, usually 2 years. I'd rather have it sit vacant for a month than have to go through the cost of refurbishing and having it vacate in a short time and the expense of finding a new tenant. Long term tenancy is the secret of making a good profit with rental properties. Most of my tenants stay longer that 3-4 years because I take care of the places, charge reasonable rent, and don't hassle them unless necessary.

Talk to the Owner either ask to do a 6 months lease or month 2 month. SOme prefer you to do a 12 month lease. But ask before signing a lease.

You might have better luck in an apt complex rather than a house. Owners of houses are generally not going to want to screen you, then screen new tenants after such a short period. Complexes have more staff and resources and will even provide 3 month leases.
