What Is National Housing Authority?

What are my options for moving from one housing authority to another?

  • I currently have a 3 bedroom house which I rent through a housing association, how would i go about trying to move to a totally different area. Am I allowed to register on other housing associations and councils whilst still living where I am now? Am not considering it yet but its a possibilty in 2 yrs time when my children go off to uni, I might want a smaller house and also to live closer to my partner as him moving here would not be feasible because of his job and travelling, it would make more sense me moving closer to him.

  • Answer:

You are allowed to register elsewhere unless the list is geographically restricted to persons already resident in a particular area. Alternatively, as you are a Housing Association tenant, you are eligible to use the transfer schemes to do a Direct Exchange with a council tenant in the area that you would like to be. Your housing office should have all the details - and this is a right, not something that you need to be concerned about doing.

If you are thinking of a move in the next two years, I would suggest that you put your name on the list right away. You can apply to absolutely any housing authority, although if you have rent arrears in your current home, this might hold you back. As you are not homeless, you will join a host of others who are wanting to get a new home in any particular area, usually the council will want to re-home thier own tenants first, so it's wise to get your name on the list as soon as you can, as you would be failrly low on the priority scale..

As far as I am aware you can put your name on any Association's waiting list, but a Council's own Housing list may have restrictions (ie local connection to an area or what they deem as a local connection). Two years sounds a good length to be on an Association's waiting list (although some lists are up to five years long!), but if they have a Choice Based Letting scheme, you may be able to 'bid' for properties at any time.
