What areas of Philadelphia are safe and cheap to live in?

Your opinion please: Best areas to live IN and right OUTSIDE of Philadelphia??

  • Safe, somewhat friendly environment, not too cramped, decent homes, and most important, affordable? North, south, east, west? Thanks for any opinions: I've never been there but need to move there in just two weeks!

  • Answer:

I answered your post about living outside the city. If you want to live in the city and are renting you might try far Northeast Philly (Somerton 19116) which doesn't feel like the city. Roxborough/Manayunk is also a popular place to rent (19128, 19127) although slightly more expensive to rent. I wouldn't recommend buying in Philadelphia though.

I live in Bucks County just outside Philadelphia. It is nice. I am close to the malls(Neshaminy and Franklin Mills mall). It is not really expensive. Montgomery county especially west of the city is expensive. Chester County can be expensive but has some areas that aren't that expensive yet. Delaware county is not really expensive. Bucks county still has some bargains as far as housing. Bucks county is north on I-95. Eastern Montgomery county is West of I-95. Western Montgomery County such as the King of Prussia Mall is west on I-76. Chester county and delaware county is south of the city on I-95. Personally stay out of the city all together. It is way to congested and they will tax you to death.
