Tips to keep my apartment cool during the summer PLEASE HELP?

Top or bottom floor of apartment with large dog?

  • I have the choice of a bottom floor apartment or 3rd floor. (I don't want a middle apartment) This apartment is located in Fullerton, Ca and neither my fiance or I have lived there, so we don't know weather as well. The man who showed us one apartment said that in this apartment you can kind of hear people walking around up stairs, but not much else. The floor is carpet, and very sound proof to us. I couldn't hear myself walking, so I figure that is a good sign. We also have a 50 pound golden retriever that is almost 2 years old and is really still a hyper puppy. She can be quiet and all, but she loves to run and gallop (yes, gallop). Now I want to live on the first floor so that I can save on air conditioning in the summer and so that we don't have to keep my dog calm constantly in order to keep the down stairs neighbors happy. Also I know that I will have a lot of groceries to carry alone and I don't want to have multiple trips up and down stairs. Though, my fiance wants the third floor so we don't hear people above us...but that's kind of all he has to defend the top floor. Oh, and a view, woop. Help me please!

  • Answer:

Ground floor. For starters, you will not have to confine the dog as much. As a large dog owner myself I can tell you that there may come a time when your dog is sick or injured. You do NOT want to be carrying that dog up or down any stairs. Everyone, you, the dog and the neighbors, will be happier if you are on the ground floor.

Bottom. large dogs...and steps...not so good. Ditto banging on someone else's' ceiling

If you have inspected the soundproof worthiness, take the lower apartment. Remember, you are the boss (and your fiance knows it)

People with large dogs and small children should always get a ground floor apartment. Get the top floor, your downstairs neighbors may complain about your dog trampling on their heads.

Guess Who

It sounds like it would be a much better idea to try and rent a home with a fair size back yard. Young dogs tend to get restless when confined to a space they can't run freely in. However, if you have no other choice, I would say the bottom floor as it would be easier to access the outside for the frequent walks you will probably have to take for her. Plus this will b less of a disturbance to the other residents.
